Why your regular health plan won't help you abroad

Most U.S. health plans, including Medicare, provide little or no coverage outside the country.

  • A hospital overseas usually wants payment up front, in full
  • Medical evacuation is almost never covered, and it is the cost that ruins people
  • Travel health coverage pays the provider directly and gets you home if care isn't good enough where you are

For family and friends visiting Hawai'i

If someone is coming to visit from abroad, coverage options exist depending on how long they are staying. The right plan depends on length of stay and where they are coming from, so this one is worth a quick call rather than a guess.

What it looks like when it matters

Real member stories from the carrier, shared here because they say more than any brochure. Premiums shown are what those members actually paid, and yours will vary.

  • A retired couple from Phoenix on a multi-trip plan. He fell photographing a statue in the south of France and shattered his leg. The plan moved him to a better hospital, arranged direct billing, and flew him home in business class with his wife as escort. About $24,000 in costs, every penny billed to the plan. His annual premium was $349.

  • A 57-year-old hiking Kilimanjaro developed chest pains at altitude. The plan arranged an emergency helicopter to a hospital in Nairobi with a U.S.-trained cardiologist. Total incurred: $16,500, including the $11,500 helicopter. His single-trip premium was $63.

  • A traveler in Vietnam with severe abdominal pain, where local care wasn't adequate. The plan air-evacuated him to Bangkok for treatment with an escort. Total incurred: over $86,000, covered under a single-trip plan.

What this is not

Travel health coverage is not trip cancellation insurance, and it does not replace your regular health plan at home. It covers medical care and evacuation while you are away. If you are looking for coverage for cancelled flights or lost luggage, that is a different product, and we will point you to it.
